11th Meeting of the Speakers of the Parliaments of the Visegrad Group States


The 11th Meeting of the Presidens of the Parliaments of the Visegrad Group Countries was held in Budapest on February 27–28, 2014.


The meeting was hosted by the Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary László Kövér, and attended by Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic Jan Hamáček, President of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic Milan Štěch, Marshal of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland Ewa Kopacz, Marshal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland Bogdan Borusewicz and Deputy-Speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic Renáta Zmajkovičová.


The meeting in Budapest was devoted to the discussion on four topics: 1) The development of a new framework for V4 parliamentary cooperation, 2) Joint representation of our interests in the EU, with special regard to the inter-parliamentary conferences within the EU, 3) The role of V4 parliamentary cooperation in supporting the Eastern Partnership, and 4) Situation in Ukraine.


Two final documents were adopted at the end of the meeting:


  1. Joint Statement (in connection with: the development of a new framework for parliamentary cooperation in the V4, the joint representation of interests within the EU, the role assumed by the cooperation of the V4 parliaments in supporting the Eastern Partnership), and
  2. Joint Statement on (the situation in) Ukraine.


On the initiative of the President of the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic Milan Štěch the Speakers signed a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, U Shwe Mann, supporting the reform efforts targeted specifically at amending the constitution, alongside offering assistance in sharing our experience with constitutional and legislative changes or functioning of democratic state institutions.


A press conference was held after the meeting.
